Rs. 25,000 given for heart surgery of a 55-year-old man
His heart sank when S.M. Ramachandran was told that he had coronary heart disease and needed surgery to rectify the problem.
The surgery would cost Rs. 1,60,000, and he, employee at Central Theatre, finds making ends meet tough even otherwise. His wife, Vijayalakshmi R, is an acute diabetic and does small-time tailoring work at home. His son is just out of his diploma course.
But when members of Coimbatore Penta Ladies Circle, number 37, came to know of Mr. Ramachandran's financial difficulties, they stepped in to help him out by raising fund for his treatment.
“Sreeraj. B, owner of the theatre, told us about Ramachandran, and we decided to contribute Rs. 25,000 to help him out, said Bhuvana Suri, project coordinator of the circle.
According to Ramachandran, 55 years old, the date of the surgery would be known in a couple of weeks. The surgery to be held at Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences. “Mr. Sreeraj is helping me in finding out donors to raise the amount needed for the treatment,” he said.
The fund-raising was done as part of the 11 {+t} {+h} anniversary celebration of the chapter, which is a part of the Ladies Circle of India (LC India).
Apart from grants from the parent association and money collected through exhibitions, film screening, plays and music programmes, business houses and individuals came forward to make their contributions.
An amount of Rs. 53, 208 was raised to help children with disability, help an aged woman conduct eye surgery, provide medicines to members of tribal community in Saralapathy, and Pollachi, and sewing machines to provide job-opportunities for women.
According to Ms. Suri, LC India conducted various projects in schools to provide quality education, infrastructure development, health, hygiene and sanitation, nutrition and education scholarship for students.
The chapter under the ‘Sanitation at Rural Indian Schools', an international service project undertaken in India by Ladies Circle International. It had built bathrooms in rural schools in Muthipalayam, Mehaman and Anamalai. The group also conducts programmes to provide a platform for members of transgender community to come together and express their views.
